Daily Market Commentary : 28th Feb. 2017

Indian share markets continued to trade range bound in the afternoon session amid mixed global indices.

Equity benchmarks closed lower for second consecutive session Tuesday, dragged by further profit booking private banking & financials, auto and FMCG stocks. Overall it was another consolidation day for the market as investors were cautious ahead of Q3 GDP data and US President’s speech.

NSE Nifty closed at 8878 levels, down by 18 points or 0.2%, while BSE Sensex closed at 28743 levels, down by 69 points or 0.2%.

Asian stock markets finished mixed as of the most recent closing prices. The Shanghai Composite gained 0.40% and the Nikkei 225 rose 0.06%. The Hang Seng lost 0.77%. European markets are lower today with shares in Germany off the most. The DAX is down 0.11% while London’s FTSE 100 is off 0.04% and France’s CAC 40 is lower by 0.01%.

BHEL was the top Nifty gainer, whereas BPCL was the top Nifty loser in Tuesday’s trading session.

Broader markets outperformed the major indices in Tuesday’s trading session. BSE Mid-cap index closed at 13552 levels, up by 18 points or 0.1%; while BSE Small-cap index closed at 13698 levels, up by 88 points or 0.6%.

Economic Affairs Secretary said on Tuesday that all states have agreed and the GST bill will be implemented by July 1. Soon after the announcement major Logistics’ stocks were buzzing on bourses. Gati was up by 8.2%, Snowman Logistics was up by 7.2%, VRL Logistics was up by 5.9% and Transport Corporation was up by 5.1%. Gati closed at Rs 129.7 per share, up by Rs 6.3 or 5.1%.

Manali Petrochemicals spiked by 12.4% in the BSE Small-cap index as government is likely to levy anti-dumping duties of upto USD 135.4 per tonne on imports of a chemical used in foam making, which comes from Thailand. The stock closed at Rs 41.4 per share, up by Rs 5.9 or 16.7%.

Transformers and Rectifiers India is having a profitable day on the bourses. The stock of the company has zoomed 8% intraday. The stock closed at Rs 399.3 per share, up by Rs 7.3 or 1.8%.

Bajaj Finserv Limited touched its record 52-week high of Rs 4005 per share, up by Rs 183.8 per share or 4.8%. The stock closed at Rs 3976 per share, up by Rs 139.4 or 3.6%.

Lincoln Pharmaceuticals from the bunch of small-cap stocks closed at Rs 244.5 per share, up by Rs 40.7 per share or 20%.

Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) closed at Rs 8.02 per share, up by Rs 1.3 per share or 19.8%.

Adhunik Industries closed at Rs 123.9 per share, up by Rs 17.1 per share or 16.0%.

Reliance Communications closed at Rs 38.8 per share, up by Rs 2.1 per share or 5.8%.

There were 807 advances, 651 declines and 66 unchanged stocks on NSE, reflecting negative undertone floating in the market.

The rupee was trading at 66.69 per US dollar.
