The fact is paintball is an expensive sport. The ongoing playing costs such as paintballs, air tank refills and playing fees can add up and keep many players from enjoying the sport as often as they want to. Saving money on your initial equipment purchase whenever possible is smart. While the entire game is based around your paintball gun, skimping on this item will definitely affect the amount of fun you have on the field. When shopping, the game is to try and find the best, most reliable paintball marker for the cheapest price. While there are many cheap deals to be found on Craig's list and eBay for 'pre-owned' markers, these can be a can of worms only to be opened after the transaction has taken place. With reliability being a key factor, rule out wasting your time dealing with problems associated with used equipment. If you're going to spend the money, limit your search to only shopping for new guns. New paintball guns have warranties and much fewer problems than used markers from unknown sources.

While you can buy paintball guns from big retail sports stores, supplies are often limited to only one or two models of name brands ruled by minimum advertised prices. While it might be convenient to run to the store and pick up a new paintball gun, this is not where you will find the deal of a lifetime. The best place to find the widest selection of paintball guns for discount prices is online. While you might pay a bit more because of shipping costs, what's more convenient than picking out the most awesome paintball gun you've ever seen right from your couch and having it delivered right to your door? Retail paintball is hugely competitive online and there are literally thousands of internet stores competing for customers. This creates an environment that's very advantageous to the comparison shopper who's willing to take time to research and find the best deals.

When you're looking for a discount priced paintball gun, first define what you're searching for. Are you looking for a good quality marker for a discount price or just an extremely low sticker price without concern for how long the gun will last? Oddly enough, paintball guns with a price range of $20-$50 do exist. They're called the JT Splatmaster and resemble the plastic toys that shoot suction cup darts you can sometimes find at gas stations or dollar stores. These markers are powered by a built in hand pump and do not rely on CO2 tanks that have to be refilled. They also use a smaller size paintball than what most standard guns use. While these paintball guns are not something you will use forever, they're a great way for a beginner to try out the sport with very little commitment cost wise. If you're looking for more than just a plastic toy for a weekend trial, consider a basic model marker from one of the popular name brands like Tippmann or Spyder. These companies offer great beginner guns and starter packages that include a tank, mask and hopper so you're ready to play as soon as you open the box. Expect to pay $60-$150 for a good beginner paintball gun that will last as long as you want to play or until you want something faster and more advanced. While these markers cost a bit more, they are covered by warranties and are built much more durable.

For the cheapest discounts and greatest amount of savings, buy your paintball guns at certain times of the year. When the brand new models are just released, markers are at their highest price. Paintball companies often time the release of new products and paintball guns for the beginning of the competitive season (around February, March and April) and some right before Christmas (about mid-November). The majority are timed right before spring. These are the times to avoid buying the newest craze in paintball. If you want the best deal, wait until the end of the season. Most competitions start wrapping up in late July, early August, leaving September, October and early November as relatively dead months for paintball. This is when retail stores are dying to get rid of the older models and make way for the new. They need room on their shelves to stock up on the new products being released for the Christmas rush and often mark down paintball equipment so it moves faster. Most of the time, the latest version of paintball guns to come out are often not that different from last year's model. If you can wait a year or two for the newest models to be replaced by even newer, you can often find a very good quality marker for an inexpensive price.
